Teachers

As part of the Breakthrough Initiative, Breakthrough Collaborative and Breakthrough Miami have invested time in recruiting and training teacher interns. The following are findings regarding Breakthrough teachers.

 

  • 723 - For the 2009-2010 school year, Breakthrough sites hosted 723 teacher interns nationally.
  • Top 10 Internship - Along with MTV and The White House, Breakthrough is consistently ranked in the Top 10 Internships for College students by the Princeton Review.
  • 50% volunteer their time in other educational or youth advocacy programs

Whether Breakthrough teachers join Breakthrough because they want to pursue a career in education or they are converted to the field by their summer experiences, Breakthrough is a proven training ground for future educators and advocates.

Students

The following is a reflection of the student body at Breakthrough Miami. The findings include:

  • Over 90% of Breakthrough students are students of color (Nationally)
  • 62% of Breakthrough students will be 1st in their families to attend a four year university, helping in reducing or ending poverty in their families.
  • 95% Students said that thier summer teachers and administration held them to high standards.
  • 92% of Breakthrough students feel they can be creative at Breakthrough Miami.
  • 93% of Breakthrough students say that Breakthrough Miami has helped them see the importance of education.
  • 5,400 of Breakthrough students are college bound annually. (National).
  • 20,000 - 20,000 students have prepared for college as Breakthrough students over the 33 years of Breakthrough's history. (National)
  • 75% of our Breakthrough students claim to have participated in challenging classes over the summer.
  • 65% of high-income students are enrolled in a college prep curriculum, as compared to only 28% of low-income students; Breakthrough Miami students strive to take College Prep classes throughout their education.

The research shows Breakthrough has an impact on students’ educational preparedness, decisions, and outcomes.
