Our Programs:

  1. Summer Institute: Breakthrough Miami is centered around a six-week summer program currently located at four campuses in Miami: Ransom Everglades School, Miami Country Day Schooll, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, The Cushman School, Palmer Trinity, and International Studies Charter School. Students, of 10-15 years, spend their day alternating between academic classes, extracurricular activities, and all-school events. Teachers make an “all-day, every-day” eight week commitment, where they design and teach three courses, plan trips and special events, and get to know their kids and colleagues.

  2. School Year Program: Breakthrough Miami serves our middle school students year-round through a program of Saturday academic classes, tutorials, enrichment, mentoring, and advocacy. Our volunteers work with our students as tutors and serve as “Breakthrough Saturday” teachers.

  3. College Bound Program: Once students enter an academically rigorous high school, Breakthrough Miami continues to mentor and guide students by offering support and intervention throughout high school to assure on-time graduation and admission to a top four-year university. College Bound is a year-round program for students in 9-12 grades. Tutoring, mentoring, college admissions guidance, and advocacy characterize the year-long program. Much like our Summer Institute, the College Bound Summer Program exposes these students to experiential learning, service work, and extracurricular activities. Our local partners provide us with teachers, volunteers, and resources.

  4. Teaching Internship: Central to the success of the programs is the unique “students-teaching-students” model, which recruits outstanding high school and college students as teachers, mentors, and tutors during both the summer institute and school year program. This rigorous teaching internship has been recognized nationally as an exemplary model to meet the needs of the lower-income, minority students served.
