FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What commitments will I have to make to Breakthrough Miami?

Breakthrough Miami is a tuition-free, academic enrichment program consisting of a six week Summer Institute and a comprehensive school-year program, taking place over 14 Saturdays. Students enter the program the summer before 5th grade and complete the program upon high school graduation and college entry.

What are the responsibilities of Breakthrough parents and guardians?

Family support is very important for academic success and that holds true at Breakthrough Miami.  We will ask for your support in ensuring that your child attends the program every day, does his or her homework consistently,   and attends events and individual academic advising meetings that parents/ guardians must attend annually.  Details are available once the Scholar is enrolled, and throughout their time as a Breakthrough Miami Scholar.

What is the Breakthrough Miami summer schedule?

During the summer, Breakthrough Miami takes place over six weeks (mid-June to early August), Monday through Friday, from approximately 9:00 a.m. - 4:20 p.m.

How much does the program cost?

Nothing. Breakthrough Miami is tuition-free for Scholars. Due to support from numerous foundations and individual supporters, our Scholars pay nothing to participate. We expect families and Scholars to "pay" for the program through their commitment to attend all Breakthrough Saturdays and six-week summer program.

Is it okay to miss a few days of the program for vacation?

Attendance is a vital component of the Breakthrough Miami mission. You may not miss more than 3 days during the summer institute, and failure to attend at least 11 sessions can potentially result in dismissal from the Breakthrough Miami program. Our Scholars stand to benefit most when they attend the program on a consistent basis and actively participate.  We have committed ourselves to providing our Scholars with a high quality school-year program at no cost to families. As part of your commitment to Breakthrough Miami, you are required to sign an attendance and progress report contract.

Where is Breakthrough Miami?

Breakthrough Miami has six program sites: Miami Country Day School, Ransom Everglades School, Gulliver Schools, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Palmer Trinity School and College Bound at the University Miami.  Students do NOT need to attend one of the host schools to apply.

Which site will I go to if I am accepted?

Site assignment is determined by a student's current school.  All students apply through the Breakthrough Miami website.  The online application will assign a Breakthrough Miami campus for each student school's zip code.

Is transportation provided?

Yes, all Scholars are provided with FREE transportation at a Breakthrough Miami bus stop.  In some cases, the bus stop will be at the Scholars' home school.  We strongly encourage carpooling and parent collaboration.

Are meals provided?

Yes. During the summer, Breakthrough Miami provides breakfast, lunch, and snack to all Scholars.  During the School Year, lunch is provided to all Scholars.  You may bring lunch if you desire.

Is Breakthrough Miami a regular school?

No, Breakthrough Miami is an enrichment program, which means that it only takes place during the summer and on Saturdays during the school year, taking place outside of regular school hours. Scholars will attend Breakthrough programming in addition to their regular school. Breakthrough is not an alternative to year-round school.

How do I apply?

One must fill out an online application found on the BreakthroughMiami.org website. Once you have submitted your online application you must submit an additional Parent/ Guardian Packet available on the website. The Parent/ Guardian Packet will need to be returned to the site the student is assigned to and applying to.  Breakthrough Miami staff will notify a student of their final site upon acceptance.

When do I find out if I am accepted?

End of April. Student applications are typically due in early March each year. Breakthrough staff takes approximately one month to review all applications. In late-March, we notify students of an in-person interview. Breakthrough staff reviews interviewed applicants and notifies students whether they are accepted in the program for the next eight years.  Unfortunately, because of a limited number of spaces, we cannot accept every student who applies.
