Breakthrough Miami Overview

Breakthrough Miami is an eight-year, tuition-free academic enrichment program that provides motivated middle-school students from under-served communities with the tools they need to achieve their most ambitious goals in life. Our students-teaching-students internship engages outstanding older students as teachers, mentors and role models, so that our scholars enter and thrive in college-prep high schools and enroll in college. This award-winning program serves 1,300 talented students. More than 95 percent of our students attend public schools in Miami-Dade County, while participating in our enrichment activities on five independent schools and one university site -- Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Gulliver School, Miami Country Day School, Palmer Trinity School, Ransom Everglades School, and the University of Miami.

Instructional Coach

General Job Description

Our model aspires to make learning fun, engaging, and grow the potential of our Teaching Fellows, staff, and students in a supportive environment. Instructional Coaches (ICs) are experienced and successful professional educators who provide content specific support for Breakthrough Teaching Fellows throughout the summer and engage fully in the Breakthrough Miami community.  ICs dictate the level of academic rigor during Breakthrough's summer program through their interactions with Teaching Fellows.  Exemplary ICs effectively communicate content specifics to Teaching Fellows, guide fellows through effective planning and execution, and hold both fellows and students to the highest expectations.  Each IC will have a group of Teaching Fellows in his/her department(s) and is expected to lead department meetings, visit each fellows' classes at least twice a week, evaluate lesson plans and curriculum overviews, and meet individually with Teaching Fellows regarding their on-going work, all the while giving constant feedback and support.  Since ICs are the only professional teachers on-site, they are accountable for the quality of instruction Breakthrough students receive and are responsible for supporting Breakthrough Teaching Fellows through their teaching experiences.
