"Homestays are a wonderful introduction to our program as it provides a way for individuals in the community to become actively involved with the program."

It was great that family has shared so much of their life with me. it has opened my eyes to
all the great things I can
accomplish one day.
–Xavier Ifill

I LOVE MY HOMESTAY. They have really made this the best experience of my life.
–Lia Shepherd
I had a great experience. I was able to experience something that I had never seen before and meet people I would never had if I didn't have that homestay.

Every summer, Breakthrough Miami, offers a highly effective, academically rigorous, and interactive six-week summer institute taught by intellectually gifted, talented and service-minded high school and college students, including many from our own Ransom Everglades, Carrollton, Miami Country Day, Cushman and Palmer Trinity communities.
This upcoming summer, we are hiring an unprecedented 80+ teaching interns from Miami and across the United States. In addition to students from the University of Miami and Florida International University (FIU), our college teachers come to us from Yale, Harvard, Brown, Boston College, Washington University, Duke, Stanford, Howard, Clark, Spellman, Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia and many more. For eight weeks these young men and women volunteer their time (day and night) to teach our students.
As part of our effort to attract the best and the brightest, we want to continue to offer a home stay opportunity for out-of-state college student. We need your help once again to make this possible!
We ask that you please consider opening your home to one of our teachers. If you have a room in your home, are going away this summer and need a house sitter or if you love the opportunity to meet a dynamic individual, please consider our student teacher.
If you are interested in housing an out-of-town teaching interns, please contact the Administrator at
admin@breakthroughmiami.org.
"Homestay families are an important source for faculty support, helping them to deal with the stress of adjusting to a strange city where there are no social networks beyond the program. A good homestay environment can help the faculty member cope with the demands of teaching at Breakthrough Miami."
We are indebted to the following families who so generously opened their home to support a young leader in his/her work with low-income students. We could not do this work without your support and generosity. Thank you!

Homestays Should Provide:
- a comfortable place to sleep
- a place for teacher to work
- access to food for meals
- access to laundry facilities
- no more than a 45-minute commute to the program
- a supportive environment
- clear expectations and rules for the teacher
"Providing stable, nurturing environments
for out-of-state teachers is a crucial part of any
Breakthrough homestay program."
